Cold Cuts for Lunch: Dress Up Your Sandwich

March 2, 2010

ham sandwichToday we are honoring the humble sandwich!  March 3 is National Cold Cuts Day.  The sandwich you take to work or send with your child to school speaks volumes.  They range from the kind you can buy in a vending machine to those that grace the cover of food magazines.  What’s in your sandwich?

Sandwiches are Number 1 for Lunch

Sandwiches are the number one food choice for lunch. Sandwiches are also consumed in one out of nine dinners eaten at home.  The most popular sandwich in America is ham, followed by the BLT.

So how do you make a great sandwich?

Use fresh bread, fresh ingredients and a little love.

The best trick for sandwiches is to make something on the weekend for dinner and plan for leftovers – ham is good, so is turkey or chicken.  Slice it up, sprinkle on a little seasoning like Peppery Herb rub or Over-the-Edge Herbed Spinach Blend and put it on your favorite bread!  My kids love a good crunchy French baguette.  They used to love white bread, but we’ve all learned that whole wheat is a better alternative. Or  try focaccia.  But if you are like me and can’t eat most bread, turn your sandwich inside out – make it a lettuce wrap. (If it weren’t National Cold Cut Day, I’d say use left over grilled vegetables, too!) We always use Racy Wasabi Raspberry Mustard along with crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes to add color and flavor. It’s also a great wayto add vegetables and  to cut calories – mayo has 99  calories per tablespoon, mustard only 10.

The love part?  Maybe you cut off the crusts, or give them that indulgent surprise (like the banana and peanut butter you hate to make)…or add a note on top of their sandwich bag to let them know you care.

How to Keep Cold Cuts

We’ve all had those cold cuts in the plastic bag that get slimy…you don’t want to eat them.  Cold cuts should only be kept for 3-5 days in an airtight container in the meat drawer where it’s cold! Certainly, that’s not what my mother taught me.  The deli cut meat tastes better and has better texture, but it can be a little pricey.

The Ultimate Sandwich Question: Triangles or Rectangles

The most divisive question when it comes to making your sandwich is how do you cut it? In triangles (on the diagonal corner to corner) or rectangles (from top to bottom).

Vote and tell me how you cut!

Add a comment about your favorite sandwich and we’ll have a drawing to give away 10 jars of Racy Wasabi Raspberry Mustard.

What’s not to like about Racy Wasabi. This is one of my favorite TSG products.

It’s great for sandwiches, hot dogs, mixed in meatballs, hamburgers & meatloaf, as part of a marinade or just plain old dipping sauce for pretzels, egg rolls, beer bread, etc. or wherever you want to add a touch of surprise!

This is in my top 5 fave TSG products, hands down. My fiancee (who claims to hate raspberries) even loves it and there are never any leftovers when I use it! My favorite sandwich to spread this on would be Virginia baked ham and havarti cheese with lettuce, tomato, and avocado on a nice fresh ciabbata roll. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

  • 27. Erin Schenke  |  March 2, 2010 at 1:36 pm

  • 28. Rebecca Jones  |  March 2, 2010 at 1:40 pm

So want to try this. All my family lives in Sullivan, IL right near an Amish community. I love to get their homemade garlic mustard and jalepeno mustard. So delicious so I am sure this would be great on my roast beef, colby jack, and fresh bread either sourdough or white

Take an egg roll wrapper, some broccoli slaw, and a touch of mustard……roll and fry then use a little on the side of your plate for an AWESOME experience!

  • 37. Carrie  |  March 2, 2010 at 5:01 pm

This is super good mustard!! My fiance’ loves it!!

  • 38. Carol Shiver  |  March 2, 2010 at 5:28 pm

I love the Wasabi Raspberry Mustard. I make roast beef sandwiches with provolone cheese and lettuce and wasabi mustard on Italian bread and of courseit is the best mustard around. It adds a little kick to it but not to much heat. You have to try it. It also taste great on chicken breast cooked on the grill. If you use boneless chicken then you can make a sandwich with that as well as dinner.

  • 39. Sherry Brady  |  March 2, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Raspberry mustard would taste good and/or different on a roast beef sandwich.

  • 40. Brandy  |  March 2, 2010 at 7:23 pm

My family loves “melt” sandwiches. We take bagels- your favorite kind (we do either plain, everything, or onion) and toast them slightly. Then we spread each half with wasabi mustard (or our flavor of the moment- which sometimes strays to a batch of herb, onion or garlic dip that I keep on hand in the fridge) Then, we top it with our favorite toppings- from mushrooms and cucumbers to avocado and lunch meat. And, lastly it gets topped with your favorite kind of cheese. And then, under the broiler it goes for just a couple mins- just to melt the cheese! My personal favorite is an everything bagel with wasabi, avocado, teryaki chicken breast and topped with provolone! It is served open faced-so it’s a meal. Melts in your mouth, and so satisfying!

  • 41. Tammy Tannehill  |  March 2, 2010 at 9:48 pm

We love grilled cheese with honey ham! If you add TSG Racy Wassabi Raspberry Mustard, it would make an ordinary sandwich all the better. We usually add regular mustard before grilling, but R.W.R.M. would give it a little bit of a kick, and a new twist on an old idea. Yum !!

  • 42. Ken Smith  |  March 3, 2010 at 5:38 am

This is the best for making Deviled Eggs. Try it sometime, its AWESOME

  • 43. Raeanne Amell  |  March 3, 2010 at 7:03 am

I make reubens with deli corned beef, honey smoked ham, swiss cheese, pepperjack cheese, sauerkraut, on rye toast spread with mayo, pickle relish and our scrumptious raspberry wasabi mustard adds the special zing

  • 44. Susan Campbell  |  March 3, 2010 at 8:34 am

my friend just made me a turkey sandwich with this and its heavenly. I have to have more!!

  • 45. Christa Shelman  |  March 3, 2010 at 9:23 am

LOVE my spicy wasabi mustard on a good ole’ fashion ham and swiss on multi-grain bread…Also delicious to dip pretzels in:)

  • 46. Denise Valente  |  March 3, 2010 at 11:47 am

These comments are great! I will certainly have to try this mustard. My favorite sandwich is a toss up…fresh turkey, lettuce, tomato, a touch of mayo on an onion or everything bagel or my husband’s creation of a mix of fresh cold cuts, black forest ham, lean capicola, lebanon bologna, white american cheese, lettuce and a touch of mustard on a fresh keiser roll. Now don’t they both sound even better with the wasabi mustard?

  • 47. Kathy Johnson  |  March 3, 2010 at 3:58 pm

I mixed the rasp. wasabi mustard w/ mayo and coated it on chicken breasts before I rolled in bread crumbs/parmesan cheese/s&p mixture, then baked. MMM, the mustard gave it just a little bit of kick, it was so good! I also tried the same as above but w/ halibut!

  • 48. Joan Troyer  |  March 3, 2010 at 7:48 pm

It’s required to dip pretzels in. Any pretzel will do. But take a soft pretzel, slice it like a bagel. Slather TSG’s Rasi Wasabi Raspberry Mustard on both sides and put deli sliced turkey, salami, and ham on one slice and avocado on the other. Put the two slices together, grill or place in a panini grill. Then garnish with tomato slices, cucumber slices, and lettuce.
Always keep the jar next to the sandwich to add more as you like.

  • 49. Jennifer Feaster  |  March 3, 2010 at 7:49 pm

  • 60. Elizabeth  |  March 3, 2010 at 9:41 pm

One of my favorite things to make with this Mustard is this :
** Take Potatoes, any kind (I prefer Red potatoes)
** Dice them into chunks (I hope that makes sense)
** Put them in a saucepan and drizzle the Garlic Parmesean Vinegrette over them, add diced red onions and sautee over medium heat (you can cover with lid to make the potatoes softer, or leave lid off for crispier potato)
** Once crispy add the Racy Wasabi Mustard and Worchestershire Sauce and you are good to go with the best Roasted Wasabi Potatoes in Town!

Turn your ho-hum sandwich into a spicy panini grilled on the George Foreman grill! Take your favorite bread, spread both sides with TSG’s Rasi Wasabi Raspberry Mustard, add meat and cheese then grill. For an “extra” flavor, use TSG’s Sweet & Spicy Pepper Jelly on the outside of the grilled crust. Yum!

  • 66. Kim Moore  |  March 4, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I use it as a dip for my cooked salmon!
